Woollahra Hillside: A Narrative of Seasonality and Scale

Occupying a rare, expansive footprint on one of Sydney’s most exclusive hillsides, our Woollahra project is a refined study in layered living. Situated high within the canopy of mature palms, flame trees, and jacarandas, the site offers a dramatic vantage point over the verdant slopes of Bellevue Hill. Our vision was to transform this multi-leveled terrain into a cohesive sanctuary that celebrates stately proportions of the land and the shifting beauty of the seasons.

The journey begins at the property’s threshold, where a reimagined gatehouse—now a formal and welcoming introduction to the estate— leads to a long, cobblestone driveway. For a client who treasures the passage of time in the garden, we curated a plant palette designed for deep seasonality. Throughout the estate, existing mature specimens are paired with new, vibrant plantings to ensure a constant evolution of color and texture.

At the heart of the home, the main terrace serves as the primary social hub, offering panoramic views that feel intimately connected to the surrounding treetops. This level transitions down to a sculptural pool area, featuring unique, bespoke tiling and a custom-designed fence that balances safety with high-end aesthetic precision.

Further down the slope, the atmosphere shifts toward a private family retreat. A new, custom-built koi pond serves as a tranquil centerpiece for the younger family members to engage with nature. The final descent, guided by curving stone stairs, leads to an expansive lawn framed by abundant planting—culminating in a secluded firepit and bench area designed for the family to grow into. It is a garden that honors the sophisticated stature of its location while providing a soulful, ever-changing backdrop for family life.
