Kambala House: A Hamptons Heritage on Sydney’s Coast

(In progress)

Perched on one of Sydney’s most prestigious streets, Kambala House is a refined homage to

the storied estates of the American East Coast. For this project, the vision was deeply

personal; having spent three years designing in the Hamptons at the start of my career, I

sought to translate that sense of understated legacy and classical elegance into a

contemporary Sydney context.

The journey begins in the elevated front garden, where a romantic pergola creates a

structured, sun-dappled gateway to the new residence. Guided by the principles of classical

symmetry, the landscape features an expansive lawn hewn into a precise geometric form,

punctuated by Buxus balls and manicured hedging. This disciplined approach continues

with a pair of symmetrical mazes that frame the entry stairs, set against a softening

backdrop of hydrangeas that provide a seasonal infusion of colour and texture.

Moving through the site, a private courtyard offers a secluded sanctuary designed to capture

the afternoon sun. Within this space, verdant greenery and flowering climbers drape over

architectural arches, creating a lush, immersive escape that feels worlds away from the city.

In the rear garden, the narrative of symmetry reaches its conclusion. A levelled, expansive

lawn is framed by layered, flowering hedges that add depth and privacy to the site’s

boundaries. By integrating climbers across the building’s new facade, the built form is

gently softened, ensuring the architecture and landscape exist in a state of elegant, enduring

harmony.
