Berry Estate: A Dialogue with the Australian Horizon

Nestled on the outskirts of historic Berry—a town celebrated for its unique blend of French heritage and verdant countryside—this 4.5-hectare estate is a thoughtful study in scale and naturalism. The design was born from a desire to transform a traditional rural holding into a contemporary retreat that doesn't just sit on the land, but speaks to the very soul of the Australian landscape.

The property’s greatest luxury is its connection to the horizon. From the main residence, the gaze is drawn across expansive levels toward a river that winds through the site’s own boundary. We sought to celebrate this vastness by framing the breathtaking views with groves of native Banksia trees. Their sculptural forms and silver-green foliage catch the afternoon breeze, anchoring the garden within its wilder surroundings and filtering the golden, ephemeral light unique to the NSW South Coast.

Closer to the home, the landscape balances modern living with rural charm. A generous swimming pool and alfresco kitchen offer a vantage point for watching kangaroos gather at dusk under fiery, sun-drenched skies. Further into the site, a secluded firepit area provides an intimate sanctuary for evening gatherings, while an organic orchard and wild meadow ground the estate in a sense of seasonal abundance.

This project is more than a garden; it is an immersive experience of the Australian spirit—a place where the refined culture of Berry meets the wild, untamed beauty of the horizon.
